A conversation on the creation of male characters by women between Drag King Pioneer Diane Torr and acclaimed Scottish writer Zoe Strachan.

Thursday 17 November, 6pm to 7.30pm (£3/free)

Diane Torr has been teaching women how to dress and pass as men on city streets around the world for twenty years. Zoe Strachan has recently published her third novel and has, for the first time, created a gay male protagonist. What happens when women ‘inhabit’ the bodies and psyches of men? What can be learnt by undertaking this gender shift and how has this work, along with the work of other women writers and performers playing with sex and gender, impacted on ideas of gender and masculinity.

Most literary establishment prizes are handed to male writers, leaving the lyricism of the female voice unheard and unacknowledged. We want to celebrate those voices in all their individuality and wisdom – to showcase female writing across its wide spectrum, from emergent writers to those who are well known.

So bring along your favourite book by a female author, have a chat with the writers from Linen Press and maybe swap your book 4 someone else’s!

West is West
Tuesday 18 October, 12pm to 2pm

Salford, North of England, 1975. The now much diminished, but still claustrophobic and dysfunctional, Khan family continues to struggle for survival. Sajid, the youngest Khan, the runt of the litter, is deep in pubescent crisis under heavy assault both from his father’s tyrannical insistence on Pakistani tradition, and from the fierce bullies in the schoolyard. So, in a last, desperate attempt to ‘sort him out’, his father decides to pack him off to Mrs Khan No. 1 and family in the Punjab, the wife and daughters he had abandoned 35 years earlier. It is not long before Ella Khan (Mrs Khan No. 2) with a small entourage from Salford, England, swiftly follows to sort out the mess, past and present.
