Literacy & Numeracy

A relaxed, informal ALN session at the Library

The Library offers free literacy and numeracy provision to any woman over the age of 16 who can identify areas in which they want to improve their confidence, skills, knowledge and understanding in reading, writing, spelling or numberwork.

Help with Reading & Writing

Whether you want to improve your spelling, work on punctuation, learn how to write letters, understand bank statements, get back to basics with numbers or learn how to help your kids with their homework, Glasgow Women’s Library can support you.

What is Adult Literacy and Numeracy?

The ability to read, write and use numeracy, to handle information, to express ideas and opinions, to make decisions and solve problems, as family members, workers, citizens and lifelong learners.

The Literacy Project at GWL

We offer free literacy and numeracy provision to any woman who can identify areas in which they want to improve their confidence, skills, knowledge and understanding in reading, writing, spelling or number-work.

We offer learning on a one-to-one basis within a group setting, with female tutors, in a welcoming, women-only learning environment.

We offer guidance to encourage learners to make informed choices about their learning, developing a personalised learning plan that is practical and relevant to women’s lives.

In addition to our one-to-one tuition, we also facilitate group learning that increases women’s knowledge of how they can continue their personal development.

Progression Routes

As women gain the confidence to progress, we work with Further Education providers to ease the transition into accredited courses.

We are able to support women to work towards Core Skill qualifications at SCQF Levels 2 & 3.
