20th September, 12:30pm: Women Only Film Screening: Arranged

An opportunity to watch BME themed films in a women only environment followed by an informal discussion. Popcorn and soft drinks will be provided! “Arranged” based on a true story, this charming and original romantic comedy focuses on two young New York women with a lot more in common than first meets the eye

21st September, 5:30pm: Two Decades of Changing Minds

It’s the Library’s twentieth anniversary on Wednesday 21 September 2011 and to mark this wonderful milestone we are launching a year of events, exhibitions and celebrations!

23rd September, 9:00am: Wigtown Book Festival: Hysterical Women and Graphic Grrrlz

A collection of Glasgow Women’s Library’s graphic novels and commix by women will be on display at Wigtown Library for Wigtown Book Festival.

26th September, 9:30am: Living Classrooms

A chance for local women to take part in creative learning in an outdoor environment in the Southside of Glasgow. Children also welcome.

26th September, 10:00am: Wigtown Book Festival: Her-Story Scrapbooking Session

Use a fabulous range of creative papers, gems and embellishments to create a scrapbook page to capture special moments in your life. You can also create a lovely scrapbook page dedicated to a woman in your life or in Wigtown’s past or present.

26th September, 2:00pm: Wigtown Book Festival: Podcast Launch

The Wigtown Women’s History Walk was launched in March 2010 and has been in great demand for 18 months. The group of volunteers who created the walk have now created a downloadable podcast of the walk and this event will celebrate its launch.

26th September, 2:30pm: Wigtown Book Festival: Women’s History Walk

This fantastic guided walk, created by local women, charts the history and achievements of Wigtown women.

30th September, 2:00pm: Wigtown Book Festival: “Hysterical Women and Graphic Grrrlz” An Illustrated Talk

To complement our exhibition at Wigtown Library, Glasgow based illustrator and zine-maker Heather Middleton will give an illustrated talk on the history of graphic novels and zines by women authors.

5th October, 3:00pm: Researching Local Women’s History: Clydebank

Would you like to find out more about women in the Clydebank Blitz; the suffragettes in Clydebank; the Singer factory strikers; and women who worked in the shipyards? Or maybe there is another local woman from Clydebank’s past you would like to know more about…

6th October, 11:00am: Dreamscapes

Part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival, this workshop provides an opportunity to recall any special memories or dreams and illustrate them by creating a scrapbook page using creative paper, gems and embellishments. This workshop explores how you can increase wellbeing by recalling cherished memories or dreams that bring back positivity and a brighter outlook on life.

6th October, 6:00pm: Rhyme for a Reason

Come along to the library and share in poems of all sorts that will inspire and excite. Celebrating National Poetry Day with women’s poetry that lifts the spirits, makes us laugh and generally has a positive impact on our lives. Why not visit the library beforehand to dip into our collection and find a gem to share with others.

10th October, 2:00pm: Memories of Our Mothers 1

Renfrewshire Mental Health Arts & Film Festival these 2 oral history sessions will focus on memories and recollections of women – whether it is memories of your own life and upbringing or the memories of a woman who has influenced or inspired you – mother, grandmother, aunt, friend. This is your chance to tell your story.

11th October, 1:00pm: Twenty Years of Making You Think

Part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival and to mark our anniversary we are holding an event for you to come and share your stories of the library and hear other people’s with a backdrop of inspiring materials that chart the library’s history.

13th October, 2:00pm: WMH Workshop: Visit to Scottish Screen Archives

Our popular drop-in Women Make History group will be going out and about again, this time visiting the amazing Scottish Screen archives, home of the filmed records of Scotland’s social, cultural and industrial history and the lives of ordinary Scots across the generations.

14th October, 3:30pm: Cinema Feminista special: Blue Black Permanent

A very rare opportunity to see Margaret Tait’s debut film, Blue Black Permanent. A haunting and magical film about a daughter’s attempts to come to terms with her mother’s mysterious death. This is a delicate and poetic work of intense emotion. With time for discussion after screening.

17th October, 11:00am: Body Talk

Our Body Talk events use film to generate discussion about women’s health. This forth event will focus on how women’s health is affected by poverty, in particular fuel poverty. We will be showing a film, before having an audience discussion and ending with a practical workshop and information.

18th October, 12:00pm: Women Only Film Screening: West is West

An opportunity to watch BME themed films in a women only environment followed by an informal discussion. Popcorn and soft drinks will be provided! “West is West” set in Salford, North of England, 1975. The now much diminished, but still claustrophobic and dysfunctional, Khan family continues to struggle for survival.

27th October, 12:00pm: She Settles in the Shields: Publication Launch

She Settles in the Shields provides a unique opportunity to meet the women who travelled to Scotland from all over the world, in search of family, love and security. Come along to the launch event of this fantastic publication. Time and venue to be confirmed.

5th November, 2:00pm: Glasgay! Lesbian Activism on Screen

In 1997 lesbian activist Jackie Forster was featured in the BBC series ‘The Day that Changed my Life’. This session, part of the Glasgay! 2011 programme, provides a rare opportunity to see this documentary, which explores how a lesbian love affair in 1958 changed Jackie’s life.

8th November, 6:00pm: Glasgay! Lesbian Avengers

Lesbian Avengers and other unruly women: a workshop exploring lesbian activism in Glasgow Women’s Library’s collections. Come along to hear about the history of key lesbian campaigns including the Glasgow branch of the Lesbian Avengers in the fight for equality, and if you were involved then let us know and record your story. Using the objects from the Lesbian Archive as inspiration, there will also be an opportunity to make your own campaign materials – badges, whistles and attitude welcome!

10th November, 5:30pm: Book4Book

Bring a book. Bring yourself. Grab a cuppa. Grab a seat. Have a listen. Have a chat at GWL’s first Book4Book event. So bring along your favourite book by a female author, have a chat with the writers from Linen Press and maybe swap your book 4 someone else’s.

14th November, 2:00pm: GWL Learner Forum

We welcome everyone who has been coming along to learning, events and activities at GWL to come along and share their views and ideas with other Library learners and members of the GWL Learning Team.

17th November, 6:00pm: Gender Shift: Women Who Make Men

A conversation on the creation of male characters by women between Drag King Pioneer Diane Torr and acclaimed Scottish writer Zoe Strachan.

28th November, 6:00pm: Scottish Women’s Aid 35th Anniversary Exhibition

The launch event of an exhibition celebrating the 35th anniversary of Scottish Women’s Aid. Using photographs, film and memorabilia it highlights the work undertaken to address the issue of domestic abuse in Scotland. The exhibition will run throughout the 16 days period and is available to view Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 4.30pm. Booking for the launch is essential.

1st December, 6:00pm: WMH Workshop: 16 Days of Action

The women’s movement has had many successes over the decades, although often the ongoing experiences of discrimination can make it feel as though little ground has been made. This event will highlight the violence against women campaign in Glasgow and Scotland, and claim it as one of the real success stories of the movement. Using some of the documents from our unique collections at GWL we will chart the VAW campaign’s growth over the past 30 years.

21st December, 2:00pm: Short and Sweet

Banish the winter blues and join us on the shortest day of the year for National Short Story Day.
