National Lifelong Learning Programme
The Glasgow Women’s Library lifelong learning programme is now going Scotland-wide. The Library can offer a rich, diverse programme of activities, events and courses for women of all backgrounds. This could be online resources, an introductory talk on the women’s library tailored to your local group from our national lifelong learning development team, a training session on how to develop your own women’s history walk or help with starting up a book group. Below are some examples of some of the learning activities we can offer to women throughout Scotland:
The F Word and Fish on a Bicycle DVD
This award-winning video charts the learning journeys of a group of culturally diverse young women exploring the history of feminism and what this term means to them and others in their communities. This is a lively, provocative and interesting resource to use in discussion with young women and those who work with them.
The video was developed by Pilton Video and the F Word Girls group in partnership with Glasgow Women’s Library.
Recording Living Heroines
This activity focuses on recording and researching local ‘living heroines’. Samples of DVD records can be shared with groups to inspire and illuminate the amazing experiences, testimonies of past lives and pioneering achievements of women still living.
BME Women’s History Project
This GWL project devised by our BME Development Worker has generated transferable materials that will be available to be used by mixed and BME groups nationally including:
‘The Model House’
Created by GWL’s BME Development Worker working with the artists Sadia Gul and a group of South Asian women learners, this exhibit is a composite, 3D representation of the homes they had before migrating to Scotland.
‘She came to the Shields’
This exhibition is linked to a GWL publication of the same name that records and illustrates the histories of women migrants to Glasgow’s Pollokshields area from the 1950′s on. Includes photographs, documents, objects of significance and portraits of the women participants.
Women’s History Walking Tours
GWL has developed 4 popular walking tours based on Women’s History in Glasgow. It has visited and supported the development of other women’s walks in Scotland.
We are keen to encourage the development of further women’s history walks but also use the model of the walks to raise awareness of the lack of visibility of women’s history in specific local contexts.
We can also offer other learning activities, including:
ALN for Women
For women who work with women: awareness raising and skills development for women working with ALN learners. (including the GWL DVD “Literacy is for me!” and use of GWL’s Breaking Barriers publication.
Reading for women’s health
Women and bibliotherapy online resource and learning module. Starting a book group for all levels of reading linking online into the book groups at the women’s library in Glasgow.
Women’s History Archival Training
Our GWL Archivist will work with women and women’s groups on how to conserve and preserve their own and their group’s history.
Women’s History Road Shows
A series of large scale Road shows that will have information stalls, object handling and reminiscence sessions and ‘surgeries’ on the value of photos and other records of women’s lives.
Making the most of your Women’s Library
A mobile Women’s Library session targeted at women who work with women and women’s groups to raise awareness of GWL and covering how to get the most out of our website, how to access information support and resources and how to contribute your own news and ideas.
