Adult Literacy and Numeracy

-

The Library offers free literacy and numeracy provision to any woman over the age of 16 who can identify areas in which they want to improve their confidence, skills, knowledge and understanding in reading, writing, spelling or numberwork.

Openings at Glasgow Women's Library

Our Adult Literacy and Numeracy Project has been lucky enough to form a partnership with the Open University. We are delighted to be able to offer women supported study to help them with Openings courses. Openings is a perfect first step into further learning as there is expert support from O.U. tutors over the phone and weekly study groups available at The Women's Library for anyone who may be scared of writing an essay, reading for information or simply worried about spelling and punctuation.

The course options are interesting and can give women a taste of what is on offer at the Open University. More information about the Openings courses is available here.

The Literacy project at GWL

There are still a few long-term learners using the ALN project who continue to progress and enjoy their learning adventure, but, as a result of a publicity drive, we hope to have many more new learners joining. Already there has been a partnership developed with The Wayside Day Centre. Their women's group have had literacies support provided by the Library's ALN project for their creative writing venture. The group produced a Wisdom Wall for International Women's Day, celebrating their lives as women and acknowledging successful women of the world.

We are now also working in partnership with a group of women at Cranhill Community Project who are learning English through John Wheatley College. We are supporting the women who find the classes a wee bit too difficult and give them one-to-one assistance. This also means we have a base from which to provide ALN support to women from that community who are not already attending English classes at Cranhill Community Project, and for native English speakers in the area.

We continue to provide support to women at Red Road Women's Centre. Tuition is held in group settings 3 days per week.

Future plans include building on the success of the ALN project by developing improved links within the community, and to contribute to the plan for sustainability beyond 2008, for the ALN project and GWL as a whole.

As part of the re-launch, we have come up with a new mission statement and aims that hopefully encapsulates what we do and how we do it!

Mission Statement:

We offer free literacy and numeracy provision to any woman over the age of 16 who can identify areas in which they want to improve their confidence, skills, knowledge and understanding in reading, writing, spelling or numberwork.
