Glasgow Women's Library is researching and compiling the stories of women who relocated to Glasgow to start a new life.
In recent decades, a large number of individuals left their homeland to seek opportunity in Glasgow. Many were forced by circumstances beyond their control such as famine, poverty, disease or escaping from the inevitable persecution.
The early settlers were men who travelled to Britain to earn a living. Once settled, they invited their wives and children to join them.
We are keen to capture the fascinating stories of women who worked hard to maintain themselves and their families in an entirely different culture and climate.
The stories will be an integral part of recording the history of migration of women to Glasgow. It will inform the wider community on why they migrated to Glasgow, sacrifices they made, problems they encountered and how they contributed to the City of Glasgow.
We are keen to hear from people who would like to take part in this project as a volunteer or participant, or both! If you are interested, please contact the Library.
