Openings at GWL

If you have not studied for a while, why not start with an Openings course to build your study skills. They are also an interesting way to find out which subject is the right one for you. Studying an Openings course will give you the chance to try out supported study with the Open University. You can work on your study skills (such as essay-writing, planning your time and taking notes), build up your confidence, get a taste of your chosen subject and decide what you want to study in the future.

The next run of courses will start in June and last between 16-20 weeks. There are no entry requirements for any of the courses. For those on benefits the course is free, or the cost (£99) is redeemable through Individual Learning Accounts (ILA). Each course is worth 10 points towards a certificate, diploma or degree.

The courses are designed for people who have not studied before, or who may have studied a long time ago. Some of the courses available are:

You will be encouraged to join weekly study groups at Glasgow Women's Library if you feel you need extra support to get through the course. You can receive help with reading the course materials to extract information, writing essays, getting your thoughts down on paper or help with spelling, punctuation and grammar.
