Women on the Shelf
Women on the Shelf is the new GWL initiative designed to raise essential funds towards our Mitchell Library refurbishment. Women on the Shelf gives you the opportunity to sponsor an individual book, a library shelf or a complete library section in our new Mitchell Library premises, with every penny going towards our building fund, contributing to the one million pounds we need to raise. Donate to the Collection
Glasgow Women’s Library is a unique resource in Scotland, and houses a huge collection of materials by, for and about women. Since the Library has no budget for materials, the collection has grown over the years through the sheer generosity of its users, members and supporters, who have donated thousands of items ranging from books and journals to banners and T-shirts. Donations are always very welcome, as they help the library to keep growing and developing.
If you are considering making a donation to the Library collection, whether a single book or your own collection please read our donations policy and then contact us. Collection can be organised if necessary.
All donations very welcome
The Library has no budget for stationery, materials or furniture therefore most of what our visitors see, use and enjoy is donated.
Recent donations have included:
- Personal archives, magazines and books
- Painting by Clare Galloway
- Use of a greenhouse to propagate plants for the community garden
- Wood for the stove
- Decaffeinated Fairtrade coffee – donated by One World Shop, Byres Road, Glasgow
- Fruit for a garden party – donated by The Fruit Barra, SEAL, Gorbals
- Toilet rolls – donated through InKind Direct
- Bird house
Financial donations
Many individual women, groups and sponsors have supported the Library’s growth during its 18-year history. Since we remain a non-core-funded organisation we still rely on the generosity and support of donors and sponsors in order to support even basic aspects of the Library’s day-to-day running.

Writers and Artists
There are many ways to support our work: membership, donations and gift aid. But did you know that if you are and artist or writer, you can bequeath your royalties to us? Your contribution would help ensure the continuation of this unique library service for and by women, dedicated to celebrating and empowering women.

Other ways to support GWL
Donate your time and skills: Some women choose to donate their time, energy and expertise to the Library. We will be posting requests for volunteers with specific skills or for specfic tasks on the Volunteer request page.
